The major goals Discovery Center Springfield has set for IYA 2009 are to:
- Engage patrons in scientific inquiry about the world and the larger universe.
- Provide patrons the resources and opportunities to investigate how astronomy and related scientific principles impact their lives.
- Offer patrons the most up-to-date information about our universe, and help translate that into an understanding of how the scientific community actually works.
- Establish the groundwork for permanent astronomy exhibits and educational programs.
