Wednesday September 15th or Thursday September 16th 4-7pm- Discovery Center Fall Volunteer Training Session. If you are interested in giving back to education and inspiring young minds, think about volunteering at Discovery Center. Discovery Center utilizes volunteers in all aspects of our non-profit operation. Working with exhibits and visitors on the floor to behind the scenes planning or building. Discovery Center has implemented some great fun and interactive training for staff and volunteers. As part of a new professional development program at Discovery Center, Portal to the Public (POP) uses tools and techniques to introduce materials-rich, highly interactive presentation skills to local scientists to help them communicate complicated science to the general public. Discovery Center staff quickly realized these skills help us to meet our mission of inspiring life-long learning and have integrated these tools into our staff and volunteer training to improve our visitors' experiences. Friday, September 17, 2010 - Science Sprout Museum Day Kick-Off. The 3rd Friday of each month from September-February we invite all young learners up to age 6 to learn, explore and discover a different topic each month. September theme is "Are you my Mummy?". Saturday, September 18, 2010 - Discovery Science Club 10am-12pm. Discovery Science Club is back! This club is designed for children ages 6-12 and one accompanying parent! Thursday, September 30, 2010 - Science Behind Beer - 6:30pm. The basic ingredients haven't changed much since ancient Egyptian times. Come learn how the science behind brewing makes the difference between your favorite ale or lager. Both Todd Frye, owner of The Home Brewery, and Ashton Lewis, Brew Master at Springfield Brewing Company talk about the history of brewing, science behind home brew and commercial brew. Discovery Center of Springfield is a hands-on interactive science center located at 438 E St. Louis in downtown Springfield, Missouri. Completing an expansion project in September, 2006 to be the 1st LEED Gold Certified building in southwest Missouri. Discovery Center will have new hours starting Saturday, September 11th. Current Discovery Center hours are Tuesday-Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-8pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm. Admission is free to members and children 2 & under. $9.00 adults, $8.00 seniors and $7.00 children (3-15).
