Green
Building Expansion Project
Green Building Project Goal:
In
a dramatic first for the City of Springfield, the Discovery Center
announced that its new addition will be a LEED-Certified Building,
making it one of the most environmentally-responsible buildings
in the State of Missouri.
By
using high performance and sustainable building standards on the
Center's 29,000 square foot renovated and expanded structure,
we are creating an atmosphere that:
- fosters
environmental responsibility through a natural learning/living
laboratory experience for our visitors.
- provides
a healthy environment for guests and employees.
- expands
educational opportunities & increases the Center's visibility
- decreases
the Center's annual operating costs.
Project's Sustainable Design Goals:
- To reduce,
reuse, and recycle resources and materials where ever possible
during construction and ultimately on a day to day operational
basis.
- To implement
features and practices to promote a healthy work environment.
Project Energy Education Goals:
- To educate
the city and Ozark region's residents and tourists by providing
a high profile demonstration venue of high performance "green"
buildings.
- Produce
a comprehensive guide pointing out "green" amenities in the
building, the purpose and outcomes expected from these choices.
- Educate
board and staff so they are well versed to discuss the sustainable
building practices we implement out in the community and with
visitors as well as the impact on the operational expenses.
- Create
media worthy events designed to highlight the building, impact
on operational costs, and the educational components reflected
throughout the building.
- Develop
new curriculum and expand on our current Enviro-mania program
to discuss the benefits of the choices the DCS made during construction
and the long-term impact.
- Provide
project information on a designated page on our web site.
- Coordinate
with the City of Springfield, City Utilities and Greene County
to house demonstrations and exhibits on wind and solar sources.
- Maintain
and expand the Choose Environmental Excellence status, an advisory
group that recognizes sustainable practices.
- Be a regional
resource/clearinghouse for sustainable practices and environmental
education in all respects, ie: air, water, environmental justice,
and solid waste.
Heroes Wanted -
We have secured over 85% of the $3.76 Million Capital Campaign
Funds needed to complete this project. We still need to raise
$600,000. If you are interested in donating cash or construction
